La chiamavano «la ferrovia di Ciccio Pecora». Il curioso appellativo era dovuto alla somiglianza del trenino che la percorreva con i giocattoli esposti nella vetrina del negozio di Francesco Battaglia Ciulla, un commerciante ragusano a cui era stato affibiato proprio il nomignolo di «Ciccio Pecora».
Il primo progetto della linea risale al 1884 ma la costruzione venne eseguita molti anni dopo. Il primo tronco da Siracusa a Solarino venne inaugurato il 19 luglio 1915 con locomotive a vapore di costruzione Breda e in seguito poco alla volta venne raggiunta Giarratana; ma si dovette attendere il 26 luglio 1923 per vedere l’ultimo tratto, fino a Vizzini, attivato al servizio pubblico. L’esercizio viaggiatori si rivelò subito poco produttivo, stante la lontananza delle stazioni dai centri abitati dell’interno; ma in seguito al collegamento al Porto di Siracusa (effettuato con grande ritardo nel 1927) fu possibile l’avvio di un forte movimento di carri merci dato lo sfruttamento intensivo dell’asfalto ragusano per estrarne idrocarburi negli anni trenta; si ebbe un tale incremento del traffico merci che rese necessario il noleggio di locomotive a vapore FS a scartamento ridotto di maggior prestazione per il trasporto all’imbarco nel Porto di Siracusa.
La linea conobbe il suo momento di gloria nel 1933 quando il Re Vittorio Emanuele III visitò, viaggiando sul trenino addobbato a festa, la Necropoli di Pantalica. Durante la guerra, nel 1943, la ferrovia fu utilizzata dagli alleati per trasportare truppe e materiali per l’offensiva contro le truppe italo-tedesche a Palazzolo.
A seguito della diminuzione del traffico merci conseguente alla crisi del dopoguerra, nel 1949 , vennero chiusi all’esercizio i tratti da Bivio Giarratana a Ragusa e a Vizzini.
Rimase in attività fino alle ore 9,30 del 30 giugno 1956 quando, in conseguenza del decreto del Ministro dei Trasporti, Scalfaro, che disponeva la chiusura dei cosiddetti rami secchi delle ferrovie, l’ultimo treno, partito dalla Stazione di San Paolo Solarino, giunse alla stazione di Siracusa Nuova con gli ultimi rotabili da accantonare. In seguito vennero smontate le traversine e i binari. Il tracciato, rimasto ormai solo un sentiero, divenne percorribile in automobile attraverso le gole a strapiombo per raggiungere la necropoli.
Nel percorso è possibile ammirare una rete di “neviere“, gli antichi frigoriferi in cui si depositava la neve, per poi venderla e spedirla, attraverso la ferrovia, ai nobili degli altri contadi. La neve veniva caricata sui vagoni e spedita ai baroni le cui ville erano lambite dalla ferrovia e da queste casupole, depositi di neve, da cui trarre il ghiaccio per antiche granite.
Vicino la Vecchia Ferrovia è possibile visitare il Parco di Calaforno. Un cecchio Mulino ad acqua ci da il benvenuto all’area attrezzata di Calaforno. All’interno troviamo pini mediterranei e platani orientali che costituiscono la copertura vegetale arborea di quest’area boscata di particolare suggestione. Tavoli, panche, ed un piccolo parco giochi per bambini sono le strutture realizzate, che consentono di trascorrere una giornata piacevole in un ambiente incontaminato. Interessante è l’Ipogeo di Calaforno struttura sotterranea artificiale di epoca preistorica unica nel panorama archeologico del mediterraneo. L’ipogeo consiste nello sviluppo sequenziale e irregolare di 35 camere circolari e sub-circolari delle dimensioni medie di 2-3 metri e dell’altezza di circa 1 metro. L’accesso da una camera all’altra avviene attraverso una piccola apertura.

DISUSED RAILWAY AND CALAFORNO PARK
Called it “the Ciccio Pecora Railway“. The curious name was due to the similarity of the train that ran through with toys on display in the shop window of Francesco Battaglia Ciulla , a trader from Ragusa to which it was fastened her own nicknamed ” Ciccio Pecora” (Francis Sheep).
The first line of the project dates back to 1884 but construction was carried out many years later. The first section from Syracuse to Solarino was inaugurated July 19, 1915 with steam locomotives built Breda and then little by little was achieved Giarratana; but it was not until July 26, 1923 to see the last stretch up to Vizzini, turned to public service. The exercise turned out to travelers at once very productive, given the remoteness of the stations from the towns of the interior; but after connecting to the port of Syracuse (made very late in 1927) it was possible to the start of a strong movement of freight wagons given the intensive exploitation of the asphalt from Ragusa to extract hydrocarbons in the thirties; there was such an increase in freight traffic that necessitated the hiring of steam locomotives FS narrow-gauge greater performance for the transport boarding at the Port of Syracuse.
The line enjoyed its moment of glory in 1933 when the King Vittorio Emanuele III visited, traveling on the train decked, the Pantalica Necropolis. During the war, in 1943, the railway was used by the Allies to transport troops and materials for the offensive against the Italo-German troops in Palazzolo.
As a result of the decrease in freight traffic resulting from the crisis of the postwar period, in 1949, the year the traits were closed by Crossroads Giarratana in Ragusa and Vizzini.
It remained in operation until 9:30 am on 30 June 1956, when, in consequence of the decree of the Minister of Transport, Scalfaro, who ordered the closure of the so called dry branches of the railways, the last train started from the station of St. Paul Solarino arrived at the new Syracuse station with the latest rolling stock to be set aside. Were later removed the sleepers and rails. The track was now just a trail , it became feasible in the car through the overhanging gorges to reach the necropolis.
On the way you can admire a network of “neviere” , the ancient refrigerators where the snow was deposited, and then sell it and send it, via rail, to the nobles of the other suburbs. The snow was loaded into cattle cars and sent to the barons whose villas were lapped up by the railroad and by these huts, snow deposits from which to draw the ancient ice slush .
Near to the Disused Raillway you can visit the Calaforno park. An ancient Watermill welcomes us to the Calaforno pic-nic area. Inside we find the Eastern Mediterranean pines and plane trees that make up the arboreal vegetation cover of this wooded area of particular interest. Tables, benches, and a small children’s playground structures are made, which allow you to spend a pleasant day in a pristine environment. Interesting is the Hypogeum Calaforno an artificial underground facility unique in the prehistoric archeology of the Mediterranean. The Hypogeum consists of the sequential development of 35 rooms and irregular circular and sub-circular in the average size of 2-3 meters and height of about 1 meter. The access from one room to another is done through a small opening.
